Louis G. Hofmann

Mr. Hofman was an Assistant Dean at MHS.

Mr. Hofmann passed away on December 18, 1996 (Rochester, NY).

Obituary, Democrat and Chronicle, December 22, 1996:  Louis G. Hofmann, a member of the original faculty of Monroe High School, died Wednesday in Lakeshore Nursing Home.  He was 99.  Mr. Hofmann was a young mathematics teacher when Monroe High School first opened its doors in 1923.  It is now the Monroe Middle School.  His 44 year teaching career had spanned five decades when he retired in 1967.  He once estimated that more than 3,000 students had studied in his classroom.  He also taught summer school at East High School for many years.

Mr. Hofmann had many hobbies, including photography, gardening and woodworking and found the time in his 70s and 80s to help neighbors on Hazelwood Terrace, where he lived for more than 50 years before entering the nursing home a few years ago.

Mr. Hofmann was born on May 8, 1897, in Galena, ILL.  In 1911 he moved with his family to the dairy farming community of Smithville Flats in Chenango County.

Mr. Hofmann was a graduate of Albany State Teachers College.

Survivors include a sister, Amanda Hofmann 97, of Binghamton; a son, William Hofmann of Rochester; six grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.  He was predeceased by his wife, Ruth; another son, Richard; and a daughter, Ruth Yautzy of Rushville.
